Is Your Feedback Being Seen As Criticism?
No doubt, Feedback is a very important tool, both for personal development and performance improvement. However, it is not an easy tool to implement and master.
For the Feedback process to work, two things are imperative:
1. The receiver of the feedback has to be willing to receive the feedback. Ideally, the feedback process should be initiated by the receiver. Alternatively, the receiver of the feedback should give positive consent that she/he is willing to engage in a feedback discussion.
2. The feedback process should be objective. A good methodology for giving feedback is the S-B-I model.
Most of the time, our feedback may not be working because the above two conditions are not met. In the absence of the above conditions being met, feedback may be seen as criticism, and no one likes to be criticised.
